You 2.0 [2]: Online Reputation and Privacy Settings

On my last post, for the benefit of new subscribers, we stepped backward by reviewing what web 2.0 is. On this issue, allow me to discuss  online reputation and responsible use of digital media.

In one fora, someone asked me, “sir, what is an online reputation?”.  I  replied, “try typing your name in search engines [google, yahoo, bing] then analyze the results.

  1. What is on the first page?
  2. [assuming you own a blog or maintain different SNS accounts like Facebook & Twitter] Do you see your online accounts/profile?
  3. Are others talking about you?
  4. Can they find your work?

You may repeat the exercise, this time do it inside Social Networking Site where you maintain an account. i.e.,  Facebook, Multiply, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plurk.

We are in the age of digital media where distance and time  is no longer an issue when accessing information. When your potential client or employer, or even old classmates or friends, or long lost relative tried to locate you using web 2.0 applications, they will do what you just did and may get similar results. Unless you don’t like what your current online reputation is [or lack of it] and would want to take action.

You 2.0 [1]: Web 2.0 and Personal Branding

I have discussed on my previous posts how web 2.0 can enhance your personal brand, it helped me, and I firmly believe it can help you too =D

If you missed those posts, below are a few for your reading pleasure:

Before we proceed, however, since there are notably new subscribers who are not familiar with the potential of web 2.0, I find it proper to just bring us all together in the same understanding. Thus, we will revisit web 2.0 and rebuild our foundation.

Spamming And Personal Branding

One of the tips I am hearing from so called “personal branding gurus” to enhance your brand is to assert your expertise on people.

Promoting yourself, so to speak. While this is not necessarily bad, one must take extra precaution because too much of these can back fire and may actually do more harm than good.

Self promotion includes promoting your work accomplishments, articles and  blog entries  to social networking sites and list servs like yahoo groups. But these acts is venturing into unsolicited mail, or commonly known as “spamming”.

Your Brand Is Beyond Your Career

Hello dear readers. It’s been a long while since I had my last post. My apologies, I’ve been busy with the day time job and a lot of consultancy on the sides. Not to mention the time I spend with my new found love… running. Ha ha ha

Alright, we blogged a lot about personal branding both online and on the real world, and this is more on positioning our career in the marketplace. We also discussed about using web 2.0 to our advantage. But there are corporations and clients that are looking beyond what you can bring to the table, more than the skills they are looking at the added value you’ll bring to the organization.
