On my last post, for the benefit of new subscribers, we made a step backward by reviewing web 2.0. On this issue, allow me to discuss online reputation and responsible use of digital media.
In one fora, someone asked, “sir, what is an online reputation?”. I replied, “try typing your name in search engines [google, yahoo, bing] then analyze the results.
What is on the first page?
[assuming you own a blog or maintain different SNS accounts like Facebook & Twitter] Do you see your online accounts/profile?
Are others talking about you?
Can they find your career milestone?
You may repeat the exercise, this time do it inside a Social Networking Site where you maintain an account. i.e., Facebook, Multiply, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plurk.
We are in the age of digital media where distance and time is no longer an issue when accessing information. When your potential client or employer, or even old classmates or friends, or long lost relative tried to locate you using web 2.0 applications, they will do what you just did and chances are, they may get similar results. Unless you don’t like what your current online reputation is [or lack of it] and would want to take action.
Before we proceed, however, since there are notably new subscribers who are not familiar with the potential of web 2.0, I find it proper to just bring us all together in the same understanding. Thus, we will revisit web 2.0 and rebuild our foundation.
I will re-post 2 videos I shared in my other blog (HR 2.0) here. The 1st one is about understanding web 2.0 in layman’s term and the 2nd one, the technical definition. Here is the first video
Sorry dear readers for the late blog update, been busy lately formulating new job grade and salary structure for a company.
Anyway, as discussed in earlier posts, new media is a two edged sword. It can be used to enhance a brand, but , if unguarded, it can also destroy. Since marketing is about “battle of perceptions”, there will be handful of perceptions that are not favorable to a brand. While majority of these are manageable, there will be a few that may be dedicated to destroy a brand.
Because of this, one must do everything in his power to deliver what his brand promised both in virtual and real world, and be on guard for the unfavorable blog and social media posts.
My mind is preoccupied by the abuse, misuse and seemingly ignorance of people on the gross effect of new media in a person’s brand. Strike while the iron is hot! As the sayings goes, so please allow me to share 3 illustrations of how web 2.0 has hurt people for their careless actions, and how we can further erode somebody else’s brand because of new media.
This story has been discussed and joked about worldwide. Looks like we came to a point where we are so comfortable with the different social networking sites and unmindful of the possible consequences. At least, not until it will hit us, and hit us hard. I liked what Cyma Saeed said
I think this is an experimental phase…take Facebook for example; they just adjusted their privacy options. We will all make mistakes and social media communication will evolve. Many of us will be left with tattoos that will have to be removed (surgically), spawning the “online reputation management industry”. The next generations will have better self regulation and will also be more accepting! Just imagine what he vetting process for future presidential candidates will be like!
One head hunter who got hold of my contact details thru this blog sent an email and requested for a comprehensive copy of my CV. An executive requirement of another company fits my credentials, according to the sender. I declined the request with due respect to my present employer.
On the other hand, an officer of a company employing 1000 employees called and invited me to facilitate a Substance Abuse orientation for a fee. The guy Googled “drug abuse” and ended up in the Drug Abuse series of this blog. Though this is an earning opportunity, I also declined since activities are not intertwined and policies and procedures on the item is not yet in place. Read more…
