Spamming And Personal Branding

November 17th, 2009

One of the tips I am hearing from so called “personal branding gurus” to enhance your brand is to assert your expertise on people.

Promoting yourself, so to speak. While this is not necessarily bad, one must take extra precaution because too much of these can back fire and may actually do more harm than good.

Self promotion includes promoting your work accomplishments, articles and  blog entries  to social networking sites and list servs like yahoo groups. But these acts is venturing into unsolicited mail, or commonly known as “spamming”.

Your Brand Is Beyond Your Career

September 15th, 2009

Hello dear readers. It’s been a long while since I had my last post. My apologies, I’ve  been busy with the day time job and a lot of consultancy on the sides. Not to mention the time I spend with my new found love… running. Ha ha ha

Alright, we blogged a lot about personal branding both online and on the real world, and this is more on positioning our career in the marketplace. We also discussed about using web 2.0 to our advantage. But there are corporations and  clients that are looking beyond what  you can bring to the table, more than the skills  they are looking at the added value you’ll bring to the organization.

The MJ Brand Is All Over

July 8th, 2009

Ohh well, the world can’t seem to get enough of Michael Jackson. the self proclaimed “king of pop”. Today, the world is watching at the memorial service of MJ at the Staple Center, California, as the world bade goodbye to the greatest pop artist to date.

Let’s blog for a while, the “brand” left by MJ.

The title “king of pop”,  as discussed in various entertainment shows, was “claimed” by MJ. Though it was not bestowed upon him,  nobody dared challenged him on this. The world agreed and his music and classic dance moves changed the standards of pop music from my generation and for more than 2 decades. Michael Jackson chose this brand, introduced it to the world and lived it!

But there’s another side of the MJ brand, he was also know as “Wacko Jacko”, this time the brand was bestowed to him by people.  Though this allegedly saddened Michael, his behavior off the stage earned him this moniker. His child molestation case, his obsession to change his image and remain young and his affinity to cosmetic surgery. His marriage and family life added to the perception battle of his brand. Long after MJ is gone, his professional image, as well as his personal life will always be talked or debated about.

Transformers 2: Defining Your Brand

July 2nd, 2009

Before Transformers 2, Revenge of the Fallen, hit the big screen on June 24, my son and I was able to watch the movie at IMAX theatre (SM Mall Of Asia).  The cars and jets transforming into robots fascinated me since I first watch the cartoons version in the 80’s.

Transformers, as we all know, were defined by two brands, the clash between  the “Autobots” the good rollling bots,  and the “Decepticons” the bad flying bots. Their brand is further enhanced by their symbols.

Creating Your Brand

May 13th, 2009

For the mean time, let’s not discuss about new media and web 2.0 as your marketing tool, instead, focus on the important aspect of the brand, YOU. Web 2.0 and new media are “neutral” marketing tools, therefore, even though you have a strong online presence, if your brand has a lousy reputation, it will back fire on you.

Whether you want to be an entrepreneur, a corporate big shot, an artist or entertainer, it does not change the fact that you make your brand.

So how do we make the brand?

  1. Begin with the end in mind- be firm on what you want to be (known) and pursue it. If you are a blogger, what do you want to be known in the blogosphere?
  2. Be who you are- don’t think highly of yourself and be arrogant. Neither to think lowly of  and be a wimp. Do not copycat others but be unique and highlight what you think you are best at. Since it is expected that you’ll have competition, don’t look  at them as an enemy, instead, collaborate with them.
  3. Do not dive into every opportunity- If you think the opportunity is not for you, don’t be carried away with the cash. Courteously decline if you honestly know you can not meet the demand. Read more…
