Spamming And Personal Branding
One of the tips I am hearing from so called “personal branding gurus” to enhance your brand is to assert your expertise on people.
Promoting yourself, so to speak. While this is not necessarily bad, one must take extra precaution because too much of these can back fire and may actually do more harm than good.
Self promotion includes promoting your work accomplishments, articles and blog entries to social networking sites and list servs like yahoo groups. But these acts is venturing into unsolicited mail, or commonly known as “spamming”.
Be considerate with your target market, they’re busy people. Reading emails can be tiresome. Sending them self promotions that is not of their interest will drive them away from your brand. Our target market can tolerate these once in a while, but if this is being done regularly, it becomes annoying. I am not saying this is not a legit strategy, but overdoing this can hurt your brand.
This is also true in social networking sites. Promoting your latest feat and accomplishment in your profile is A-ok. People who follow you will certainly get this as soon as they visited your profile page, or if they agreed to receive updates via rss, email or even sms, they will be notified in a jippy. But tagging all people in your contact list, or message them that you have a new blog entry or photo to share may be a little overkill.
Generally speaking, people can hold their peace and not actually confront the spammer, but damage on the person and his/her brand is certain.
Hate Spam? Don’t Spam. Protect your Brand
