Build Your Brand

Blog.. And Get Hired

I simplified my keynote presentation to discuss with you what I shared before graduating students of two different universities in Manila. This presentation gave the graduating class some pointers on how to build and enhance their (personal) brand, merit an interview and eventually get a job by using basic Marketing principles and web 2.0.

A personal brand, during the recruitment process, is determined by (1)  perceived value and (2)  real value.

The perceived value is the first impression of would be employers based on :

  1. How you sent your CV– do not create a generic CV and mass distribute it to all companies. Tailor fit your CV based on the position and company you are applying. Highlight the credentials that employers are looking for. Always attached a picture and application letter.
  2. How you responded to a text message– Avoid these responses when using SMS: hu u?, k,  wat taym?, hu wil i luk 4? wer is d interview?
  3. How you packaged yourself during the interview–your get up (attire) shout match your interviewer’s expectation. Answer the questions confidently and honestly. Don’t bluff and communicate in English.

The Real Value, on the other hand, is your credential.  These  include the following:

  1. Your IQ
  2. Your EI (emotional intelligence)
  3. Your SI (spiritual intelligence)
  4. Accomplishments
  5. Your Leadership Potential

Your scholastic record, relevant experiences, recognitions and citations received matters during the recruitment process.

Real value is verified and confirmed using various tools like employment exams, back ground check, submission of relevant documents, among others.

But you can make the job of the recruiter easier by using web 2.0. Establish a strong online presence to highlight your real value.

In your resume CVs, include your blog url address, and social media profile. Just make sure, though, when they read your blog they will find good sense and value. When they check the pictures in your Facebook, Flicker or Multiply recruiters will not have second thoughts on hiring you. Use web 2.0 responsibly, highlight all your Q’s (IQ, EQ, SQ), your leadership potential and interests. Upload copies of your work for the whole world to see. Synergize your blog and Social Media profiles. In this way, would be employers will get acquainted with your worth and work easily, and better.

A word of caution though, make sure you can walk the talk (deliver what your brand promised to accomplish).

Personal Branding

Speaking Before Marketing Graduates

If we will use web 2.0 intelligently, and add value to others, web 2.0 will return the value and enhance our brand. It worked for me, why will it not work for you?

Ha ha ha, yeah. Our brands should deliver what it promised
  • I really like this thing that you said

"Marketing is not a battle of products, it's a battle of perceptions.."

I totally agree! And to super-charge your credential, the external presentation should at least match the credentials. We are all marketers don't you agree?
